Wildebeest(pop. 1.3 million)
- Every year over one million wildebeest travel in a circular migration according to seasonal rains across the Serengeti plains
- Their waste helps fertilize the soil
- The grass eating wildebeest stands about 4-6 ft tall and weighs 350-600 lbs.
Africa Lion
- Most of them live on open plains
- Live in small family units that move with a larger group of up to 40 members
- Females do all of the hunting, they can weigh between 260 lbs. to 575 lbs.
- They have sharp retractable claws and two-inch teeth
- Like regular cats they love to sleep, eat, and cuddle
- Even though they may be described as flesh-eating machines
African Elephant
- Are the world’s largest land animals; they can stand up to 9 feet and about 13,000 lbs.
- Live up to fifty years old; most live in families that can range from 6-70 elephants
- When an elephant dies the family mourns by staying with the body for a day or so then covering the body with branches
- They are most likely founded in restricted areas of central Africa
Grant’s Zebra
- Grant’s Zebra is the most abundant in the 3 species of zebras
- It looks like a horse but only smaller with black and white stripes
- It can weigh from 500-600 lbs.
- They live in groups called families of harems led by a single male
- They stay close together even if they migrate in herds of 10,000
- Can reach speed to up to 40 mph
- To confuse their predator’s if attacked they can bunch together to confuse the predator to see what is the front of the back of the zebra or the may simply run away
Koala Bear
- Are very muscular,lean and is 33 inches long
- Its is very fuzzy small and cute
- The females weigh between 13.2-24.2 lbs while the males weigh between 17.6 -30.8 lbs
- They have rough paws that act as traction so they won’t slip
- Each paw have digits that help it climb away from predators
- It has thick fur to keep it cool and warm; it can even repel moisture
